Soothing Spiced Hot Cocoa (with Gelatin, Turmeric and Cinnamon)


Today I have a delicious hot cocoa recipe for you! It has all the yummy taste of hot cocoa with the soothing properties of turmeric and gelatin. Perfect for an after dinner snack.

I have been reading up on the benefits of turmeric. According to my herb teacher, Patricia Howell, it is used as a system wide anti-inflammatory, it inhibits genes that trigger cancer, has demonstrated activity against 22 types of cancer, it improves blood lipid numbers, regulates blood pressure, helps with inflammatory bowel disorders, it strengthens and protects the liver, it stimulates the immune system, it is anti-viral, and a powerful antioxidant. This is an herb that everyone should be consuming every day! I have been adding it soups, and to my cooking liquid when making rice and now I am using it in my hot cocoa.

Another food that I have been researching is gelatin. It is extracted from collagen found in animal bones. It is known to help improve skin tone, reduce joint pain, contribute to healthy hair and nails, reduce inflammation in the gut, and provides amino acids that help the liver detox. Gelatin is found naturally in bone broth, but can also be purchased as a food supplement. I just found a new company and will be ordering from them next time I need more gelatin. You can get regular gelatin, which is the kind you use to make jello and thicken puddings that you have to dissolve in cold water and then mix with warm water to activate. Then there is hydrolyzed gelatin that doesn’t have thickening properties but can be more easily dissolved in hot liquids and is digested more easily by people with compromised or inflamed digestive systems. I plan on buying the hydrolyzed gelatin next time I make an order.


Here are the players. Cocoa powder, gelatin, turmeric, cinnamon and a little stevia. Also pictured is the beautiful hand painted cup from Mexico that my sister and brother-in-law gave me for Christmas.  When I drink this regularly, I actually notice less brain fog and less digestive inflammation.


The gelatin needs to dissolve in a cold liquid first, so I put a big splash of coconut milk in the bottom, stirred everything together to make a paste and let it sit while the water boiled.


Then I add hot water and everything dissolves beautifully. I have been enjoying a cup of soothing hot cocoa after dinner most nights for the past few weeks. Now I want to start trying different variations, like adding some ginger powder or nutmeg.


Soothing Spiced Hot Cocoa (with Gelatin, Turmeric and Cinnamon)

1 T gelatin powder

2 tsp cocoa powder

3/4 tsp turmeric powder

1/4 tsp cinnamon (you could also add some ginger powder if you wanted even more spice)

1/3-1 pack of stevia (I don’t like mine very sweet so I use 1/3 pack of stevia, but you can taste and add more)

2-4 tablespoons coconut milk (or any other kind of milk)

Put gelatin powder, cocoa powder, turmeric powder, cinnamon and stevia in a cup with the coconut milk. Stir it together to make a paste and let the gelatin crystals soften. Then add 6-12 oz of hot water depending on the desired strength. Taste and add more stevia as needed. Enjoy!
