Gut Healing Tea


Even though it is summer, my love for hot tea remains strong. I usually drink at least 1 cup of tea every day. If it is really too hot, then I will drink it chilled. I have a whole cabinet stuffed full of bags of dried herbs for tea, and I love that I can mix different herbs to make a tea that suits how I am feeling at that moment. If I am feeling down I will drink a cup of peppermint and lemon balm. If I am feeling bloated I will simmer up a ginger and fennel tea. If I am stressed I will drink blue vervain and chamomile.  I frequently have digestive troubles and wanted to create a tea that would reduce bloating, soothe gastric inflammation, and reduce stress. I found this recipe and used it as a base for my tea blend.


I used ginger, plantain, blue vervain, calendula, chamomile, peppermint, licorice and fennel.


I used equal parts (by weight) of each ingredient. So, I measured out 1 oz of each.


First I measured out the roots and seeds. Licorice, fennel and ginger.


I ground them in small batches in my coffee grinder.


Then I measured out my leaves and flowers. Peppermint, plantain, chamomile, calendula and blue vervain. Some of the bigger pieces I put into the coffee grinder as well to make sure everything was mixed evenly in the final tea.


Then I transferred it to a mason jar for storage.


I think this tea blend is really lovely.


To brew I put 1 Tbsp in a french press or mason jar and fill with 1-2 cups of boiling hot water.


I let it sit for about 20 minutes and then I start sipping away.


If I have to do a lot of work on my computer, or I am sitting down for an evening of relaxation I love to make a french press container of tea and sip on it until it is gone.


I am really loving this tea and since I made it a few weeks ago have been drinking several cups of it whenever I think about it. It is mild, slightly sweet from the licorice, and to drink it is a calming experience. This tea is everything I was looking for. I even gave it to a few members of my family and everyone that tried it really liked it!

For those that are interested I am going to give a list of the individual herbs and their uses:

calendula (Calendula officinale): antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal activity, reduces inflammation, promotes wound healing

plantain (Plantago major): anti-inflammatory and antitoxic

peppermint (Mentha piperita): relaxing and good for digestive disturbances

chamomile (Matricaria recutita): relaxes nervous system, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, relieves pain and reduces spasms

licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra): anti-inflammatory, soothes irritated intestinal membranes, protects the liver, improves digestive function

ginger (Zingiber officinale): anti-inflammatory and warming

fennel (Foeniculum vulgare): reduces gas and bloating, stimulates digestion

blue vervain (Verbena officinalis): relaxes and tonifies the nervous system, reduces anxiety,  benefits the liver and reduces spasms

To make the tea, blend equal parts by weight and store in a glass jar. To brew use 1 Tbsp of tea to 1-2 cups of water (depending on how strong you like it). Let it steep for 15-20 minutes and enjoy.

    1. I am sorry, I don’t. But all the herbs are easily found online if you want to make your own tea blend. I personally like Mountain Rose Herbs and Monterey Bay Spice Co. They both have high quality herbs.
